United Church of Christ Statement of Faith PDF Print E-mail

We believe in God, the Eternal Spirit, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ and our Father, and to his deeds we testify:

He calls the worlds into being,
creates man in his own image
and sets before him the ways of life and death.

He seeks in holy love to save all people from aimlessness and sin.

He judges men and nations by his righteous will
     declared through prophets and apostles.

In Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth, our crucified and risen Lord,
     he has come to us
     and shared our common lot,
     conquering sin and death
and reconciling the world to himself.

He bestows upon us his Holy Spirit,
creating and renewing the church of Jesus Christ,
binding in covenant faithful people of all ages, tongues, and races.

He calls us into his church
to accept the cost and joy of discipleship,
to be his servants in the service of men,
to proclaim the gospel to all the world
and resist the powers of evil,
to share in Christ's baptism and eat at his table,
to join him in his passion and victory.

He promises to all who trust him
forgiveness of sins and fullness of grace,
courage in the struggle for justice and peace,
his presence in trial and rejoicing,
and eternal life in his kingdom which has no end.

Blessing and honor, glory and power be unto him.

Amen.

It is Sometimes Good PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dr. David Wild
It is sometimes good to recognize that the life of Jesus is profoundly connected with our ordinary earthly pilgrimage.  At other times, the remembering of the mystery that lies within the Godly Jesus invites in us an openness to gifts and graces that go beyond our understanding.  The faith is far removed from some simple or even compilicated set of rules and beliefs.  It carries us into living as though God in Christ could take the little we have to offer into situations and expand it or enhance it in ways that will always be a mystery to us and that change the world.  It challenges us to follow the Jesus who walks on water rather than leave us alone or afraid-- and to lead others into new acts of daring faith.

The Gift PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dr. David A. Wild
If we will not come into the light of Christ, we will miss the gift of being enlightened-- that is, knowing who we really are and receiving both forgiveness and encouragement. Possibly the hardest thing to believe is that we will not be condemned if we approach our God. Maybe it is because we so often find it hard not to condemn each other that we cannot imagine a God, the being of all goodness, who would embrace our ordinary stumbling lives in grace. Somehow we need to be convinced of that again and again. How often do we struggle on bearing with us terrible burdens of remorse or trying to pretend that all is well when it is not? It is also useful to ask whether the God who is represented by the church looks like the gracious God-- or do people think that we are a condemning community carrying an equally judgmental God?

Let the Joy of the Lord Overflow in Your Marriage PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dr. David A. Wild

Ephesians 5:20-30

"Let the wife make the husband glad to come home; and let him make her sorry to see him leave."

- Martin Luther

Today, too many couples scarcely relate to each other, after years of marriage. Many other activities, responsibilities and interests seem to crowd out the importance of a happy marital relationship for millions in America. Men want to be respected and women want to be loved, neither seems to be the case in most modern marriages.

Learning To Love PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dr. David A. Wild

Luke 6:32-33.

I'm going to speak about learning to love. What I have to say may pertain to many of you who are married, but if you're not married, hang in there, because the principles we're talking about apply not only to marriage but all relationships.

People experience misery in marriage for 4 reasons.

Let me begin by asking this question. Why do marriages begin so well and often end so badly? I've been a pastor for a number of years, and no one has yet come to me to say, "Pastor, our great desire in life is to have a miserable marriage. Would you please tell us how we can live in real misery?" No one has ever said that. Amazingly there are some couples whom I have married who are living today in a good deal of misery. Why? Let me give you a few reasons.

How to Stay Married All Your Life PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dr. David A. Wild

Genesis 2:18-31 ; Mark 10:2-12.

Not long ago the newspapers carried a story from India. Two brides and two grooms discovered that a rather serious mistake had been made on their wedding day. The brides had been wearing long veils. They were hardly able to see anything around them. To make matters worse, the simple wedding ceremonies had been rushed. Both ceremonies were over before it was discovered that each bride had been paired with the wrong groom! A ruling by the village elders confirmed that the marriages were binding as performed and that nothing could be done to change the situation. Imagine that-married to the wrong person and nothing you could do about it!
